Baron Contracts: Comino Tower 2011-11-10
Also known as it-Torri ta’ Santa Maria, it is one of the largest and most important in the chain of watchtowers straddling the islands’ coastlines built by the Knights of Malta. Situated on the small island of Comino, right in the centre of the channel between the two main islands in the archipelago, it is one of the finest examples of its type and played a vital role in safeguarding shipping between the islands during the 17th and 18th century.
Consequently it required expert and sensitive interventions to retain as much as was possible of its original mortal and stone work. The work itself involved cleaning and repairing its architectural fabric and the rehabilitation on the interior. The challenge for our team consisted in sourcing and using material in existence at the time it was built, thus keeping its architectural integrity intact.
The result is an impressive structure, restored to its original state, which presents a spectacle which never fails to impress the visitor crossing the channel, especially during the night time, with its flood light façade reflected in the clear water lapping the shoreline below its walls.
